Spytunes needed something really technically challenging, a community website with server side encoding of video and delivery fully integrated into the Joomla! system enabling hundreds of streams to users.
The technology that powers sites such as YouTube is vast and powerful, when Spytunes approached us with a similar idea in mind but within a reasonable budget we thought that this was too exciting an opportunity to pass up.
Why didn’t they just use YouTube?
To begin with Spytunes was only based on YouTube but as issues arose the main reason was copyright. YouTube could remove all your videos at any time also you do not control them doing this even if they are mis-informed also under paragraph 8 (http://www.youtube.com/t/terms) of their terms they may re-distribute your video as they wish. You don’t own your video IP any more! They also wanted to develop their own community through their own specific brand without any third party involvement also enabling monetisation of the project.
We managed to find a way of integrating a number of Joomla! components together so that Spytunes could upload any video and let the server encode these files into flash video on the fly, then add them to a YouTube style administration system.
These files also needed to be easily embedded onto a Joomla page as simply as possible. Spytunes was the first integration we have ever seen of a number of components that were specifically modified to work within Spytunes requirements.
We also had to carefully consider bandwidth issues and up streaming limits and helped Spytunes select the right server for the job.
Spytunes since launch has heavily modified the original site, they guys completely embraced the technology and have added many many additions to the site. A testament to ease of use and high level of client control within the Joomla! CRM system.
Hosting and streaming hundreds of videos, Spytunes is currently the no.1 free video guitar lesson website on the internet and now has a thriving e-book store.
