NetDev Ltd approached Gamma Media to provide consultation to deliver an iPhone application for their conferencing service. The iPhone requires a unique approach and an understanding of its UI capabilities.
We start by mapping out all the features and requirements into a design specficiation from which we can see how and where the iPhone's in built UI functions and custom UI elements could be used in the GUI design. We took the varying degrees of interaction and mapped out three seperate approaches and design styles. Our first approach was to concentrate on drag and drop functionality and conference control testing approaches directly on the iPhone. Our second approach was for context related selection that would popup mini menus. Our last approach was the standard page and modal screens that are standard parts of the iPhone OS.
Knowing that the more complex drag and drop build and context sensitive menus may not fit within the development scope we also provided a must simpler third version that would be resource efficient when it comes to the final development build.
Our design goal was foremostly to create an attractive, clean application to enhance the users productivity. Every stage of the design was carefully considered to remove as many pointless bells and whistles and focus on the primnary use of the conferencing application, which is to connect people. We would look into how the ergonomics of the phone effect the hand shape and which functions to keep away from 'hotspots' or areas where accidental touching may occur.
We would also look at high contrast design for use outdoors as well as issues such as finger paths, push points and UI elements to ensure the user would not accidently hit other functions.
